EATON RAPIDS - The last time Dale and Sue Ellsworth saw their grandson was at their 50th wedding anniversary party in July.

Justin Ellsworth, a Marine based out of California, had turned 20 the preceding day and was headed to Iraq in September to serve his country.

The Eaton Rapids couple learned over the weekend that Ellsworth was killed while fighting in Fallujah, Iraq.

"It's really hard to accept," Sue Ellsworth said from her home Tuesday night.

"He was so sure everything was going to be fine. ... He was doing what he believed in. He said, 'We're saving lives every day.' "

But that dedication cost them their grandson's life. Too early, she says.

She remembers him as patient, kind and always looking out for others.

He had many friends, she said.

Justin Ellsworth played football and hockey at Mount Pleasant Senior High School. He enjoyed fishing and swimming and often talked about how beautiful the ocean was in California.

Those are all memories - all that the family has left of Justin Ellsworth.

"We have to accept it," Sue Ellsworth said, her voice becoming softer. "We can't change it."

Ellsworth's funeral will be held Saturday in Delta Township.
